Ocs have varying degrees on how "canon" and in character is, this may be useful for those who have been curious as I experiment a lot with characters.
Green:
You can consider it either on model material and/or something that is part of the character's own experience.
Blue:
This is the most common, this can be considered in character and realistic to their scenario but it is not canon.

Very not canon and most likely not in character.
